1. Kampong Phluk

Located at a 32 kilometre distance, Car rides and buses are the ways to get here, taking about an hour to reach.

2. Kulin Mountains

Kulin Mountains are filled with wonder and awe, with a journey to the mountains giving an extensive view of the beautiful countryside. It is a sacred Buddhist site with a majestic and humongous statue of Lord Buddha casted into the mountain peak, having many Buddha stone figurines are there to grab attention on the way to Banteay Srei Temple. Known for its impeccable architecture and intricate carvings along the doorways, the works here depict many scenes from the Hindu Mythology. With a serene river flowing at the base of the mountain, this is a perfect picnic spot for your entire family. It is a part of Phnom Kulen National Park which is situated 53 kilometres from Siem Reap. Cars and buses can get you to your destination in about 2 hours.

3. Tonle Sap

Tonle Sap, commonly known as “Great Lake”, is a part of the fresh water Tonle Sap river. The largest lake in Southeast Asia, this is a photographer’s paradise with many beautiful scenes along the way. People can be seen fishing in the lake, with a picturesque sunset view along the lake making it a tourist hotspot. For some mid-meal munching, there are many restros and bars lined up along the lake. Located at a distance of 54 kilometres from Siem Reap, cruises and boats will get you to your destination in less than an hour.

4. Beng Mealea

If you are fascinated by the eerie and quirky aura of abandoned places and long lost ruins, don’t miss the opportunity of visiting Beng Mealea. Though not much is still left, but looking at the remains, one can guess the magnificence and glory with which the sculptures and stones had been built. A perfect spectacle of Khmer Empire, countless photographic opportunities present themselves at the site. Located about 68 kilometres to the north east of Siem Reap, this place is worth a visit. You can get here by taking a drive of a little over an hour.

5. Kampong Khleang

Located on the northern lake edge about 55 kilometres east of Siem Reap town, Kampong Khleang has nothing different to offer in terms for tourist experience than Kampong Phluk, but has its individuality in the number of people who have settled here. The sights include stilted houses reaching up to 10 metres in height. Up for fishing? Hit the lake and enjoy the view in the lap of mother nature. All in all, Siem Reap is not only about resorts and bars but also about these wonderful locations which need exploring at least once.
