City of dawn, Auroville is an experimental township founded by Mirra Alfassa or The Mother. Auroville is the dream city of the Mother and all those people who aspire to live freely and obey the single authority of supreme truth. The centerpiece of Auroville is Matri mandir, a meditation hall powered with solar energy that has beautiful manicured garden. The town is divided into four main zones namely the cultural and educational zone, residential zone, industrial zone and international zone with Matri mandir in its centre. This place has a different lifestyle, which many people call future lifestyle of humanity. Auroville belongs to no one and no one can claim it. People from different castes, race and demographics come and live together as the nationals of Auroville. The place is barely 11 km away from Pondicherry and can be reached in 20 minutes by car or taxis. Buses run frequently, taking more or less the same time.

2. Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

The third largest mangrove forest of India offers home to very rare species of local migrants and other migrant birds. Though, the place is not a tourist trail, but is worth visiting for its scenic panoramas. The forest has many islands and sun-flecked small canals. Row boats and motor boats both go on a trip through forest with passengers. One can explore the mangrove forest in two hours but if you take the trip of four hours, you can also visit beach along with the forest. Giving an extra hundred to boatmen to take you deep inside the canals is totally worth it. The sound of birds, swish of paddles and roar of the sea are perfect elements of a perfect day, therefore, this place is one of the must go places. The distance of 64.4km from Pondicherry to Pichavaram can be covered in 1h 50 m by car or taxi. Buses can take 3 hours to get you there.

3. Tiruvannamalai

The place has spiritual aura and is blessed with lots of temples in and around. Arunachaleshwarar temple is considered one of the most important Shaivite Shrines, having Annamalai hill at his back, with nine gopurams (pyramidal towers) surrounding it. Ramanashramam is the asharam where maharishi Ramana lived. The place has an extremely peaceful environment and is largely frequented by spiritual seekers. Visitors can stay and eat here for free and donate as per their will. Seshadri Swamigal Ashramam is again a home of great rishi- Sri Seshadri Swamigal. It is very much alike to Ramanashramam with accommodation facilities available here. Then comes Girivalam, a circumambulation of the Annamalai hill which one is supposed to do barefoot. As per the locals, one can start from any point around the hill and complete one Girivalam by reaching to the start point again. The stretch is about 14kms.
