Best Day Trips from Delhi

Delhi, a Pandora ’s Box for modern day tourist, lets you indulge in all thrills cheap and fancy! From ancient architecture, street food to night clubs and bars, it is difficult to point a finger at something the Delhi Sultanate does not possess. However, the city is really crowded and it seems like everybody on the planet earth has been defecting to Delhi. This has built a very severe traffic situation which can lead you to be stuck at the same spot for a lot of time. So it understandable that one may want to break the clutches of the city once in a while, not to worry as there are plenty of good options for a fun filled one-day trip from Delhi. The following is my guide of the best places situated in close proximity to Delhi: -

1. Agra

Agra, a rare spectacle in its own right, is a city in Uttar Pradesh about 233 kilometres from Delhi. One may have only heard stories about the lavish palaces and massively built architectural marvels, while this is a place manages to testify to all those accounts. It is the land on which one of the former 7 wonders of the world, Taj Mahal stands with pride. Built by Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan as a symbol of love for his dying wife Mumtaz Mahal, the magical allure of this white marble structure is downright enchanting, with the waters of Yamuna flowing along the banks. Then there’s the Agra Fort, another remarkable piece of impeccable architecture standing its ground since 1638. It served as the residence of the Mughal emperors before their capital had shifted from Agra to Delhi. You can reach Agra in a 3 and a half hour car ride along the Yamuna Expressway. Train lovers can catch train from Rohini, Delhi to reach Agra in less than 4 hours.

2. Vrindavan

Awaken your spiritual side with a visit to the land of Lord Krishna. With over 6000 temples in a small town, Vrindavan carries mysticism in its roots. Millions of followers of the Hare Krishna community are seen temple hopping here, with Banke Bihari Mandir and Prem Mandir stealing the show. Then there is Nidhi Van, an eerily mystical place in Vrindavan that is said to host supernormal activities after dark. No one is allowed to stay in this premises after 5. Even animals retire from the place, as Lord Krishna is said to perform ‘Raasleela’ (The Dance of Passion) with the ‘gopis’.

3. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, now known as Keoladeo National Park, is one of the earliest National Parks in India, recognized primarily for Avifauna. Rightfully a bird lover’s paradise, it gives a chance to look at both the indigenous as well as the migratory bird species. The Siberian Crane is one to watch out for, as it is a very unique species with needle like beaks and a long neck like a Swan. The whole place is filled with greenery and dense forest cover, thereby giving the best habitat to birds. The best way to reach Bharatpur is a 4 hour car trip via Yamuna Expressway, since there is no direct train route which can get you there from Delhi.

4. Alwar

Alwar, 150 kilometres south of Delhi in the state of Rajasthan, is a hub of tourism lined up with many forts, lakes, heritage sites and natural reserves. The Alwar Fort, a 5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide fort is situated in the Aravalli Range. Then there is Alwar Museum, a place hosting a marvelous collection of beautiful old paintings and royal weapons. The Alwar City Palace stands out of the rest for being the perfect blend of Rajputana and Islamic styles of construction, with beautiful marble pavilions set on lotus flower bases. Alwar is reachable via a long drive on NH48, however the distance is coverable even through train from Rohini/ Avantika crossing.

5. Murthal

Murthal is one of the favourite spots for road travellers who like to stop at highway dhabas for a nice full meal. The aroma of buttery paranthas taken freshly out of the tandoor is enough to make you slurp out loud! Located in the state of Haryana just outside Delhi, it can be reached through a car ride on NH44. Make sure you plan a travel in the early morning hours or somewhere after dusk, when the summer heat isn’t a hassle.
